Most of Montana's ranchers posting there land and outfitting it out too commercialize the public wildlife.
Most ranchers lease public lands and graze there cattle for next to nothing, save there ground for winter feed for there cattle and an odvious attraction for wildlife due to the public land being over grazed during the summer months then lease hunting out for more profit.
My simple solution would be if they choose to lease public land than let the public hunt there ground.

Have a big game combo tag for Montana but the area I usually hunt is burning. I'm from West Virginia so it is too far for me to scout for a new location. Am wanting to bow hunt and stick around for the first week of rifle season so am willing to stay for a while. Looking for suggestions for places to hunt. Really appreciate any and all help.
Thanks, Jack

Montana Archery Elk unit 410
by: elkslayerdan
Hi elk hunters.
I finally had enough with not able to draw a elk tag in Wyoming now have 10 points. Colorado is becoming a joke with over the counters tags with the darn muzzleloader season in with the archery so I decided to give Montana a try! I have archery hunted elk for the past 15 years. I'm a do it yourself hunter. Pack in the camp and stay out in the mountains for week at a time or longer. I have had great success.
I put in for area 410 in Montana. If anyone has any information to share. Like your own personal experience elk hunting in this unit. Any tips/places to look at in area 410. I have been doing research online. I know talking to other hunters is much more informative. Then again I might just end up with a general tag. You can email me at elkslayerdan@gmail.com
I'm willing to share any information I have for Colorado or Wyoming .
Thank you Hunters
Dan

Just a heads up if you’re considering booking a hunt with Clovercreekranch.net, clovercreekranch.com, owner Shon Webb, swebbAtee-gogreen.com, phone 360-606-5428. Save yourself the headache and don’t.
They double booked my confirmed hunt day which caused me to lose 2 days of elk hunting in Montana and now require another 10 hour roundtrip and hotel stay to go a month later for my rescheduled hunt. They refused to refund my money, so I accepted a counter offer of a token $200 to at least partially offset my extra costs. The promised $200 has still not been paid 2 months after my successful hunt despite numerous promises and dozens of calls/texts/emails from me, most of which were ignored. Buyer beware!

Hi
I am from Laurel,MT, and I have drawn a Cow Elk tag for Montana Dist # 317, which is the east side of Paradise Valley from Livingston, MT south to Six Mile Creek around Chico. Most of the land in the valley is private, and the forest service land is very steep and rugged. I never hunted in this area before so I am not quite sure where to go. So if anybody out there knows of any ranchers who will let somebody hunt a cow or a good to place to hunt on public land, please post back to me on this forum.
Good luck and good hunting!

I am a novice elk hunter. I have been at it a couple of years, and have yet to see one during hunting season. I am lucky enough to live in Montana, and am within an hour of what I know to be great elk hunting country. I am planning my hunt for elk, in rifle season, with block management in mind. Does anyone know a good/great block management area for region 4? Some of them seem impossible to get onto due to their popularity. Any help/tips on this would be much appreciated.
Happy Hunting.

My first time elk hunting will be in SW Montana on a DIY hunt with a longtime friend who has hunted elk previously. My question is, in grizzly country is it wise to just part ways and try to cover more ground? Or should we stay together and should we find elk just flip for who shoots first? My friend carries bear spray, and I'll have a 44 mag. Thanks for any thoughts.

Got drawn for the Miss. Breaks archery tag and can't quite afford a guide. Has anyone, or is anyone willing to give a few tips on where to hunt? I know this is a long shot but I fiqure someone might be willing to give a few tips to a guy who has spent many years packing out the other guys meat. Got a chance to pack out my own but not sure where to start. I would appreciate the help!
Thanks,

Looking for information on elk hunting in the Tobacco Root Mts and Gravelly Range in SW Montana. Is one of these areas better for large bulls than the other, is the hunting pressure high. Has success been good in the past in these areas. Any tips on where to hunt in these areas is appreciated.

I am considering an Elk hunt in the Gallatin area of Montana. I keep hearing that the wolves have had a big impact on the elk population in that area. I don't want to spend the time and money to go there and find out that there are no elk to be found. Does anyone have the REAL scoop?

This year im going near dillon for a elk hunt. I have been looking for advice on narrowing down a location to hunt. I am leaning towards the blacktail wildlife management area but dont know much about the area. I appreciate any advise on this subject.

I did not draw a tag for Missouri breaks where I have hunted in the past. Having to start over and try western Montana. Looking for someone that is bow hunting there this fall and someone to share camp with. I know which counties that produce the most Pope & Young elk but need someone familiar with the area and knows where the elk are. Maybe looking for a drop camp in Park Pounty, Beaverhead County, or Gallatin County. If you have any info give me a call or email me - classpres76@gmail.com. cell 912-245-1026. Mike A. (Alabama) Even you are not hunting but have some helpful info I could use your help.

No luck so far finding elk or even elk sign. Being my first year hunting in Montana it's kinda funny because I was thinking I should be able to find elk tracks all over. That is not the case. It has been a very fun adventure for me and I've seen some amazing country. The reason I'm posting is because I was wondering if anyone has seen any sign in the Little Belt mountains. Thank you and happy hunting.

I've heard the numbers of elk in the Tobacco Roots is down and many locals are blaming the decline on wolf predation. My experience the last two seasons seems to agree that numbers are down. Your opinion, please?

I was just wondering how the elk herd is doing in between Bozeman and Livingston and south to the Wyoming border? I haven't hunted there since 2004. I saw a ton of wolves but there was still plenty of elk. I am considering going back there, then heading to Colorado for my other hunt. If the wolves have decimated the elk I don't want to waste my time or money. Thanks!

In 2012 hunting licenses can be purchased starting January 16th. The application deadline for residents and nonresidents for permits has been changed to March 15th.
The drawing results will be available by mid-April, instead of the historically late date of the end of July. So, now you will have an extra three months to plan. No more last minute throwing together a hunting trip in mid-summer. Permit applications have been simplified, as well.
Keep this in mind however: Quotas will not be finalized in some districts until Feb. 16th. So, wait until you have checked the FWP website for finalized data until after Feb. 16 to submit your permit apps.
You can request an application by writing to: Licensing Section; Montana FWP; P.O. Box 200701, Helena MT, 59620-0701. Or, by calling (406) 444.2950.
Remember, the application deadline is March 15th! However, June 1 remains the deadline to apply for antlerless deer B and elk B licenses and antelope and antelope B licenses.
What do you guys that hunt MT think of these changes? Is there a downside to this for any of you?
Hello everyone. I was wondering if I could get some advice on where I might have a chance on an elk for my first rifle season. I've sadly been traveling way too much to do any scouting. So if you could point my nose in a general direction I would be very grateful. Thanks for your help and happy hunting.

I live in Ontario Canada and love to archery hunt Deer and Moose. I have been dreaming of Elk for some time and recently feel a trip must be made. I have been thinking Montana horse back fully guided. After doing the math, I am not sure I can afford it. So I have considered a drop camp situation with a friend. However even a drop camp is an expensive way to learn. What's a guys chances and what can he expect doing a hunt like this for the first time? Any advice, where to hunt, suggested outfitters? Guided or Drop camp.
