Mar 25, 2017 Solid copper bullets by: Pat Cassidy It seems that several makers are making these now:Barnes, Nosler, Hornady ... All make heavier weights. I would check with the dealers near you as heavier bullets are available, I just don't know about factory loaded ones. You are on the right track. As far as a new gun goes it is hard to beat either a .308 Win. or a .30/06. I have killed quite a few Elk with those. The .30/06 has an edge by having a 220 grain bullet available (Winchester Silvertip is best), which is a very effective Elk load for under 200 yard shooting . Without a LOT of practice that is about as far as you should shoot anyway. The 180 gr. will extend the range a bit, but we are back to that practice thing. Good luck.

Mar 24, 2017 Get as heavy as you can get by: Pat Cassidy That weight sounds a bit light for a 7mm. I would prefer at least a 150 grain, as it has better sectional density and will penetrate better. If you ever decide to reload your own you will have a much better bullet choice. For Elk, Nosler is good but Barnes is better (less bloodshot). Good luck!

Mar 24, 2017 Penetration, penetration ,,, for Elk by: Pat Cassidy Use the heaviest, toughest bullet you can buy for the 7mm/08. If you can get a Barnes solid copper X-bullet it will do the job. The 7mm/08 is really not meant for Elk so most manufacturers don't offer really tough bullets that will bust through heavy bone and keep on going. That is an absolute must because you cannot guarantee you won't hit some. Get a couple of 5 gallon plastic buckets full of water, lay them end to end at 100 yards and shoot through them. If the bullet won't go through both buckets, choose one that will. Speed and energy are not the factors that kill Elk; getting in to the vitals and wrecking both lungs or the heart is most important. Since you cannot depend on a classic broadside shot offering itself, you need penetration. Have a great hunt and don't forget a camera!
